A Thousand-Year History

Nestled in the heart of the fertile lands of the Apt region, the Domaine de Mayol has its roots in Antiquity. The Gallo-Romans, expert connoisseurs of the vine, had already recognized the exceptional terroir here. Evidence of this is found in the remains of a Roman "villa" (agricultural farm) uncovered during the restructuring of the vineyard, a tangible proof that wine cultivation thrived here long before the first written records of its existence. However, it was in the High Middle Ages that the estate truly began to flourish, under the influence of an illustrious figure: Dom Mayeul d'Albion d'Apt. The fourth abbot of the renowned Abbey of Cluny, he administered one of the largest monastic orders in the West and owned vast lands in the Apt region, the cradle of his family.

Concerned for the prosperity of the clergy, he bequeathed a portion of his lands to the Church, as evidenced by the cartulary of the church of Apt. This document reveals a striking truth: among all the properties transferred, the vineyard occupies a prominent place. More than fifty charters detail its cultivation, from the planting of vines to the methods of farming, including property rights. Over the centuries, the Domaine has weathered wars, famines, and political upheavals. It has, in its own way, contributed to the region's reputation for winemaking.

But the French Revolution radically altered its fate. The clergy, expropriated, saw its lands redistributed. However, the vine, as deeply rooted in the earth as in history, did not disappear. Family archives maintained by Esprit Sauvan attest to the gradual reclaiming of the lands, the tithes paid to the Church, and the successive inheritances between heirs. In 1813, a particularly valuable legacy was recorded: that of the press, a symbol of the continuity of the estate.

A FAMILY ESTATE, MANAGED BY THE VIGUIER FAMILY SINCE 1841.

With the marriage of Virginie Sauvan to Mathieu Viguier, the Viguier family continues the winemaking and farming tradition. In 1956, Mireille and Robert Viguier, heirs of the estate and indirect descendants of Dom Mayeul through the houses of Reillanne and Simiane, originating from his nephews and cousins, set about reclaiming the land scattered by successive inheritances.

Their son Bernard continued this work, gradually reconstructing the estate, which now covers 40 hectares of vineyards. Building on this exceptional heritage, the diversity of the plots, and the vineyard’s ideal exposure, Bernard and Karine made the choice for environmentally respectful viticulture. Organic farming and certain principles of biodynamics naturally became central to their pursuit of authenticity and excellence. Today, the Domaine de Mayol continues this thousand-year-old legacy.

Each harvest is a tribute to the generations who have shaped it, from the Gallo-Roman era to the monks of Cluny, through revolutions and successive renaissances. The wine produced here carries the breath of time, imbued with ancient knowledge and the patient labor of the men who, century after century, cultivated these blessed lands
